Greensboro is the third largest city by population in North Carolina and the county seat and largest city in Guilford County and the surrounding Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 269,666, and in 2015 the estimated population was 285,342.

Greensboro operates under a council-manager form of government. Under the council–manager form of government, the city council is responsible for the legislative function of the municipality such as establishing policy, passing local ordinances, voting appropriations, and developing an overall vision.  The city manager position is similar to that of corporate chief executive officer (CEO), providing professional management to the board of directors.

Greensboro’s city council consists of nine members. All seats, including the mayor’s, are open for election every four years, beginning in 2017. Five of the council seats are district representatives and three seats are citywide representatives elected at-large.

After arriving in Greensboro by way of the Piedmont Triad International Airport (which is located a convenient 15 minutes from town), one of the first things a visitor often notices is that Greensboro is . . .  green!  The city has a beautiful park system with many neighborhood and community parks and a city-circling greenway that is under construction. Our downtown area is undergoing an active renaissance with new residential and commercial development surrounding our downtown minor league baseball stadium. Also under construction is the Tanger Center for Performing Arts right near LeBauer Park, both made possible with lead gifts from local families.

Sports play a central role in Greensboro’s identity.  The city is currently home to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a class A team that is a farm team for the Miami Marlins, and is also home to the Swarm, an NBA team affiliated with the Charlotte Hornets.  The Atlantic Coast Conference is also headquartered in Greensboro. We enjoy many large sporting events at the Greensboro Coliseum Sports Complex, an Olympic quality swimming venue in the Greensboro Aquatic Center, and year round ice skating and hockey at the Greensboro Ice House.

Greensboro is home to several colleges and universities that enrich the cultural and intellectual life of the community.  Greensboro schools include UNC-Greensboro, North Carolina A&T, Guilford College, Bennett College, Greensboro College and Elon University Law School. The School of Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering is a world class project under the joint leadership of UNC-G and NC A&T. Duke University, Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Elon University, and High Point University are all within an hour’s drive of Greensboro.
